Arrives 10/3 - Elka White Poppy: The Rare Heirloom White-Seeded Poppy

Add a touch of ethereal, snow-white beauty to your garden with the Elka White Poppy (Papaver somniferum). At Firefly Farm & Mercantile, we love this rare "breadseed" variety for its stunningly clean aesthetics and culinary versatility. While many poppies are known for their vibrant reds, Elka is celebrated for its pristine, paper-thin white petals and its highly productive, white-colored seeds (most are black) that have been a staple in European baking for generations. We planted this many years from Seedsavers Exchange and find ourselves enjoying it every since.

Each packet has at least 100 Seeds

📜 A Heritage of Baking Tradition

For centuries, breadseed poppies have been a vital part of the kitchen garden, valued for both their ornamental presence and their high-quality, oil-rich seeds.

  • Eastern European Roots: Elka is an heirloom variety with deep roots in Eastern Europe, where poppy seeds are a cultural cornerstone, used in everything from festive holiday pastries and traditional breads to savory fillings.
  • The "Breadseed" Distinction: Unlike ornamental poppies that are grown strictly for show, "breadseed" varieties like Elka were selected specifically to produce large, robust seed pods filled with flavorful, nutrient-dense seeds.
  • A "Pure" Aesthetic: White-flowering poppies were historically coveted in traditional gardens for their ability to brighten up dark corners or shady garden borders, providing a soft, glowing light during the cool days of early summer.
🎨 Visual & Botanical Profile

Elka White Poppy is a plant of refined beauty, offering a crisp, clean look that pairs perfectly with any other flower in the garden.

  • The Blooms: These poppies produce large, single, bowl-shaped flowers of a pure, luminous white. They feature a delicate, crinkled texture that looks like fine silk or parchment.
  • The Seed Pods: Once the petals fall, the plant develops large, handsome, spherical pods. These pods are a highlight for floral designers, providing a beautiful, sculptural element to dried arrangements and wreaths.
  • The Habit: Reaching 2–3 feet tall, these poppies have a graceful, upright structure. Their glaucous, blue-green foliage creates a beautiful contrast against the stark white of the flowers.

✨ Why We Love It

"Elka is the 'glow-in-the-dark' flower of the early summer garden. We love it because the white is so crisp and clean, and the structure of the plant is so elegant. Whether you're growing them for the beautiful white blooms, the stunning pods, or the delicious, nutty seeds for your baking, Elka is a versatile and timeless addition to the backyard landscape."

👨🌾 Cultivation & Culinary Tips
  • Sowing: Direct-sow in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked. Scatter the seeds over prepared soil and do not cover, as they need light to germinate. Press them firmly into the surface.
  • Harvesting Seeds: Wait for the flower petals to drop and the seed pods to turn a light beige color. Once the pods rattle when shaken, they are ready to harvest. Snap them off, pour the seeds out, and store them in a cool, dark place for your next baking project.
  • Culinary Use: These slate-blue seeds are perfect for bagels, muffins, cakes, and the classic fillings used in traditional poppyseed rolls and strudels.
