The Seed Savers Exchange - True to its name, this beautiful and delicious crisphead variety tolerates heat and resists bolting. Plants measure 7-8.3" long and 14.5-17" wide and produce a solid, round head. Large, silvery-green leaves are highly toothed and measure from 7.8-10.2" long and 8.2-12.2" wide. Its very sweet, incredibly crisp, and extremely juicy leaves earned this variety high marks when it was evaluated at Seed Savers Exchange in 2015. Bred by Dr. James Baggett at Oregon State University in the late 1980s for areas where lettuce can be grown throughout the summer, this variety was donated to Seed Savers Exchange in the 1990s by member Mary Schultz of Monroe, Washington. Sweet Valentine Butterhead Lettuce, Organic $3.50
  This is perhaps the sweetest lettuce available. The heads hold their form well into summer's heat. Their deep red leaves are slighly smaller than other butterhead lettuces. This is our first time growing it here at Firefly Farm & Mercantile.  Characteristics:   Organic, non-GMO, and open-pollinated  Heat tolerant  .5g or ~400 seeds Instructions - Choose cool, well-drained, loose soil with pH 6.2-6.8. Lettuce is sensitive to low pH. Lettuce can be seeded in the spring as soon as the soil can be worked. Days to maturity are from direct seeding in spring conditions.  Seeding Depth:  1/8”, seeds require a minimum amount of light for germination. Steve received the seed from Amelia Scharlach Schini whose grandmother brought it with her when she emigrated from Alsace-Lorraine in the 1880s. The Seed Savers Exchange -This romaine lettuce boasts big, sweet, crisp, and slightly crinkled leaves that are sure to please any palate. A French variety, ‘Verte Mar’ forms a solid, elliptic head on slow-bolting plants that grow 10.5-13.5" tall and 14.5-17" wide. Dark-green leaves measure 10.2-12.2" long and 5-7" wide, are oblanceolate-shaped (or attached to the stem by the pointed end), and have a slightly toothed margin. This variety stood out in the 2015 Seed Savers Exchange lettuce evaluation for its sweetness and crispness. SSE acquired it from the late Mary Schultz, an SSE member and Exchange lister from Washington.
