Lilies (Lilium family)
Lilies (Lilium): The Majestic Centerpiece of the Summer Garden
True Lilies (the Lilium genus) are the crowning glory of the mid-to-late summer landscape. At Firefly Farm & Mercantile, we specialize in high-quality lily bulbs that bring architectural height, intoxicating fragrance, and vibrant color to your outdoor space. Acclimated to the cold winters and warm summers of the Driftless Region, our collection features a diverse range of Lilium divisions, each offering unique blooming times and floral characteristics.
Discover the Divisions: Asiatic, Oriental, and Beyond
Our collection is curated to provide a continuous season of bloom. Start with Asiatic Lilies, known for their early flowering and extreme cold hardiness. Transition into mid-summer with LA Hybrids and Trumpet Lilies, and end the season with the legendary fragrance of Oriental Lilies and Rose Lilies. For the shade-dappled garden, we also offer Martagon Lilies, which thrive in woodland settings where other lilies might struggle.
Quick Lilium Growing Facts:
- Planting Window: Best planted in the fall or early spring.
- Hardiness Zones: Most varieties are exceptionally hardy in USDA Zones 3-9.
- Sunlight: Lilies generally prefer "feet in the shade, head in the sun." They love 6+ hours of direct sunlight on their flowers but appreciate mulched, cool roots.
- Soil Preference: Must have well-drained soil; lilies do not like "wet feet" during their winter dormancy.
- Expert Tip: When cutting lilies for floral arrangements, never remove more than one-third of the stem. The remaining foliage is necessary to nourish the bulb for next year’s display.
