One of the greatest strengths of the Ranunculus is its performance as a cut flower. Known for having one of the longest vase lives in the plant kingdom—often lasting 10 to 12 days—they are a favorite for spring bridal bouquets and high-end floral arrangements. Quick Ranunculus Growing Facts:
- Planting Window: In northern zones (USDA 3-6), plant in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked. In milder zones (7-10), they can be planted in the fall for an earlier spring show.
- Hardiness: These are cool-season lovers! They thrive in temperatures between 45°F and 65°F and will go dormant once the summer heat exceeds 80°F.
- Light Requirements: Full sun is essential to prevent the stems from becoming "leggy."
- Planting Depth: Plant corms 2 inches deep with the "claws" or "fingers" facing downward.
- Expert Tip (The Pre-Sprout Secret): To get a head start on the season, "wake up" your corms before planting! Soak them in room-temperature water for 3-4 hours (do not over-soak) until they double in size. Then, "pre-sprout" them in a tray of damp potting soil in a cool area for 10 days before moving them to the garden. This can result in flowers up to 3 weeks earlier!
