Painted Lady Runner Bean: A Victorian Cottage Classic Bring a touch of historic charm to your garden with the Painted Lady Runner Bean (Phaseolus coccineus). At Firefly Farm & Mercantile, we are enamored with this variety not just for its productivity, but for its breathtaking aesthetics. A beloved staple of 19th-century Victorian cottage gardens, this "bi-color" beauty features striking white and scarlet blooms that create a vertical tapestry of color, followed by delicious, meaty beans that are as beautiful on the vine as they are in the kitchen. 📜 A Heritage of Victorian Elegance The Painted Lady is one of the oldest runner bean varieties still in cultivation, with a history that predates the modern seed industry. A Gardener’s Favorite: Documented as early as the 16th century in England, it became the "darling" of the Victorian era. Gardeners prized it because it wasn't just a vegetable—it was a flowering vine that could climb up arbors, trellises, and porch railings to create a "living curtain" of flowers. A "Freedom" Bean: During times of scarcity, the Painted Lady was a dependable source of nutrition, known for its ability to produce heavy crops in cooler, northern climates where common bush beans often struggled. The Name: The name refers to the delicate, two-toned petals—a sophisticated blend of creamy white and vibrant, brilliant scarlet red—which reminded early gardeners of the colorful face paint or "rouge" worn by fashionable women of the time. 🎨 Visual & Culinary Profile This is a true "dual-purpose" bean, offering both decorative beauty and substantial table fare. The Blooms: Unlike most beans that have small, inconspicuous flowers, the Painted Lady produces large, showy, bi-colored blossoms. They are incredibly attractive to hummingbirds, who will visit your garden daily to feed on the nectar. The Pods & Seeds: The pods are long, flat, and green. When shelled, they reveal stunning, large, mottled seeds—often a mix of deep purple and tan. In the Kitchen: Harvest the pods young for a tender, flavorful snap bean. If allowed to mature, the shelling beans have a velvety, chestnut-like texture that makes them an exceptional addition to soups, stews, or sautéed with garlic and herbs. 🌿 Garden Performance & Technical Specifications Runner beans are a different "beast" than common pole beans. They prefer cooler temperatures and are famous for their aggressive, vigorous climbing habit. Garden Bed Coverage: One packet from Firefly Farm & Mercantile provides enough seed to populate a 20 square foot bed (roughly an 8' to 10' long by 2.5' wide garden bed) or to cover a generous 8-foot section of a garden trellis. Feature Technical Specification Plant Type Perennial Runner Bean (Grown as Annual) Botanical Name Phaseolus coccineus Planting Density Space seeds 6–8 inches apart Vine Height 8–10 Feet Coverage 1 Packet per 20 sq. ft. Bloom Period Early Summer through Autumn Pollinator Value Top-tier hummingbird magnet ✨ Why We Love It "Painted Lady is the plant that makes your garden look like an illustration from a storybook. We love it because it’s so incredibly lush—the leaves are big and dark, the flowers are bright and cheerful, and the beans are hearty and filling. It’s a plant that works as hard as you do, providing beautiful flowers to look at and a solid meal for the winter pantry." 👨🌾 Cultivation & Culinary Tips The Cool-Weather Advantage: Unlike common pole beans that demand high heat, Runner Beans actually prefer cooler summer temperatures. If you live in a region with very hot summers, plant them early in the spring so they can set their pods before the peak July heat. Hummingbird Sanctuary: Because of the bright scarlet in the petals, this is the #1 hummingbird plant in our garden. If you want to see hummingbirds up close, plant these right by your porch or window. Harvesting: Pick pods regularly while they are young and tender for snap beans. If you leave pods on the vine too long, they will become stringy, but they will be perfect for shelling and drying!

PRIVACY POLICY

If for any reason you are not happy with a purchase, please email us at andre@fireflyfarmandmercantile.com so we can assist. We do provide refunds up to 10 days of you receiving merchandise. We may ask for the product to be returned to be eligible for a refund. We do not do refunds for shipping unless it is something we feel we could have done better. Carriers often don’t deliver based on their own timelines but you can always pick up at our garden shop too. Unlike most online garden online retailers we have a business location too, so come in out and visit our farm.

REFUND POLICY

Shipping Policy:
Seasonal Availability: We typically have more than one season of products available to order. We separate these at time of fulfillment. Shipping is typically collected for the shipment leaving the soonest. If you have a small number of seeds, we can ship that Business 1st Class for a fee under $3 but it will not have tracking. For other items ordered that will come later like pre-ordered items, we will send you a shipping invoice to pay before your merchandise arrives. You can email us at Andre@fireflyfarmandmercantile.com and we can help.
Pre-calculated weights:
Sometimes the products purchased may weigh more or less than the calculated shipping rate. We try our best to determine the weights based on current and past inventory. We do provide refunds proactively and will communicate accordingly.
We try our best to offer the right services for you at checkout. If we see an opportunity for a more desirable service we will reach out to you. Please ensure we have a good contact number or email so we can do so.
United States Postal Service and UPS services go out Monday through Friday. This allows us to ensure we provide a quality product at a reasonable rate. Any delivery times are just estimates from the carrier once they receive the package. We cannot change this due to Shopify’s policy. I would if I could as it can lead to some confusion.
We are a small garden shop and have very little pull with any carrier (and seriously who really does with USPS or any other). For the most part UPS timelines have been the most consistent. But there are not delivery dates but days your package will be in transit once we drop it off. In average we take 1-4 business days to fulfill orders and then the carrier’s approximate shipping times are added to that.

SHIPPING POLICY

We accept various forms for payment. Currently we accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express as well as Google Pay and Shop Pay.
We strive to deliver on what we say we are going to do. Pre-orders are orders that are being taken without inventory on hand. The advantage is you get a great price, but sometimes crops just don't yield what is expected. We will use many different suppliers to fulfill your orders as best as possible. We won't substitute without your permission so please make sure you leave your best contact information so we can reach out to you. On occasion if unable to reach you, we will simply send the substitute product but you are welcome to call us once receiving it and letting us know you’d like a refund on it.
