The Seed Savers Exchange - Melon lovers can thank a small group of Canadian preservationists for bringing back this incredibly flavorful variety in the 1990s. Its thick, green flesh is highly aromatic and has a sweet, complex taste. For peak flavor, harvest fruits when slightly under-ripe, before the rind turns yellow and the fruit softens. Melons are round to slightly flattened with a heavy, silvery netting and deep ribbing, measure 8" in diameter, and weigh 7-8 pounds. Organic.

The Seed Savers Exchange - Donated to SSE in 1997 by a Minnesota family who grew it for at least three generations since circa 1914. Named after the donor’s mother who used equal amounts of melons and apples in the pie. Highly productive, early maturing fruit is small, yellow, and round with white flesh. Fruit can be peeled like an apple. Harvest while still firm for best cooking qualities.

The Seed Savers Exchange - A true French cantaloupe named for the Carmelite monks who once tended it in France. One of the easiest to grow and most luxurious of all melons. Oka Melon (Bizzard Island Strain)

The Seed Savers Exchange - Father Athanase of the Trappist Monastery at Oka, Montréal Quebec bred this melon variety in 1912. It is a cross between the Banana melon ad the green-fleshed Montreal Market melon. The melon was rediscovered on Ile-Blizard, an island in the St. Lawrence River, and is now available to gardeners once again. Melons were developed and domesticated in Africa and Asia. Europeans settling in the Americas are recorded growing honeydew and casaba melons in the 17th century.

The Seed Savers Exchange - La crème de la crème of French cantaloupes. First noted in the garden of the Bishop of Rennes nearly 400 years ago. Petit Gris translates as “little grey,” named for its appearance before ripening. Fruits typically weigh 2-3 pounds and have a mustard and olive speckled rind. The flavorful sweet orange flesh is reminiscent of brown sugar. 80-85 days.

The Seed Savers Exchange - Documented by Vilmorin in Les Plantes Potageres (1883). This cantaloupe was once a favorite of French market gardeners. Fruits weigh 4-9 pounds and have beautifully warted skin and dense sweet flesh. Almost too pretty to eat! The fragrance when fully ripe is incredible.
