Flossie's grandmother, Emma Hadley, grew the lettuce when Flossie was a child (around 1915). It was a family favorite used in a wilted lettuce salad with hot bacon dressing. The dark purple-tinged leaves are buttery, crisp, and slightly sweet. Butterhead, 40-50 days. At one point in history, Tennis Ball Lettuce, dominated the market. It grew even in the darkest of days very well and had a tolerance for the cold. America can thank Bethiah Oliver, Massachusetts seedswoman who imported it to America from the United Kingdom in 1769 There were two strains, white-seeded and black-seeded. The white-seeded strain, popular in the North, matures two weeks earlier and is slightly more bitter than the black-seeded. The southern United States, favored the black-seeded strain. Is it possible they favored it because of its sweetness or their contempt for the northern states? Additionally at Monticello, Thomas Jefferson grew 15 varieties of lettuce and favored the Tennis Ball for its low maintenance compared to other lettuces. We are currently stocking Southern Exposure while we wait for the 2026 seeds from Seedsavers. Both are the black seeded variety. The Seed Savers Exchange - Small rosettes of light green leaves measure only 7" in diameter and form loose tender heads. Grown by Thomas Jefferson at Monticello. This is perhaps the sweetest lettuce available. The heads hold their form well into summer's heat. Their deep red leaves are slighly smaller than other butterhead lettuces. This is our first time growing it here at Firefly Farm & Mercantile. Plants reach 8-10" tall and 16-18" wide and produce firm, uniform heads and green-gray leaves with highly toothed margins. Lettuce lovers can thank the Kovacs family for this remarkable variety, which has been stewarded by the family for at least 120 years. Donor James Kovacs of Fisherville, Kentucky, noted that his grandfather (John Kovacs) brought this seed with him when he emigrated from Hungary to Pennsylvania in 1905. It’s the main ingredient in a family soup recipe that also contains sautéed onion and celery in a brown roux, with water or chicken broth, milk or half-and-half, and salt and pepper. <li>Mergers and Acquisitions.&nbsp;Circumstances may arise where for business reasons, we decide to sell, buy, merge or otherwise reorganize its businesses in the United States or some other country. Such a transaction may involve the disclosure of personal identifying information to prospective or actual purchasers, and/or receiving such information from sellers. It is our practice to seek appropriate protection for information in these types of transactions.</li>
<li>Agents.&nbsp;The Company employs or engages other companies and individuals to perform business functions on our behalf. Through the Site access logs we do collect clickstream data and HTTP protocol elements, which generate certain kinds of non-identifying Site usage data, such as the number of hits and visits to our Site. This information is used for internal purposes by technical support staff for research and development, user analysis and business decision making, all of which provides better services to the public. <li>Use of Web Technologies.&nbsp;The Company may also use web beacons or other&nbsp;&nbsp;technologies to better tailor the Site to provide better customer service. If these beacons or technologies are in use, when a visitor accesses these pages of the Site, a non-identifiable notice of that visit is generated which may be processed by Company or by its suppliers. Web beacons usually work in conjunction with cookies. If customer does not want cookie information to be associated with customer's visits to these pages, customer can set its browser to turn off cookies; however, web beacon and other technologies will still detect visits to these pages, but the notices they generate cannot be associated with other non-identifiable cookie information and are disregarded.</li>
<li>Collection of Non-Identifiable Information.&nbsp;The Company may collect non-identifiable information from user visits to the Site in order to provide better customer service. Examples of such collecting include: traffic analysis, such as tracking of the domains from which users visit, or tracking numbers of visitors; measuring visitor activity on the Site; website and system administration; user analysis; and business decision making.
