Tall Utah Celery, Organic $3.55 $4.25
Celery is an interesting crop. The taste is amazing when grown at home. It does take quite a bit of moisture to grow but with mulching it is pretty easy to do. Start early inside and once the frosts are gone, do get it planted outside. It is a longer crop taking 100 days for a full size head but can picked along the way for celery during summer. For those lucky enough with greenhouses or hoophouses you can have celery even sooner. Stalks are 12" tall and stringless, the dark green leaves are filled with flavor as well. We source this variety from a few different seed labels depending on availability.  It can be probably pretty easy to guess where celery comes from - if you say Utah, you are correct. It was developed in the 1920's at the Utah Ag Center.  Organic Crisp stringless stalks Refreshingly light flavor Stalks grow to 12 inches Plants are 24-30" tall Biennial, 100 days 250 Seeds per packet This variety will grow well in most regions of the United States but is a slow grower and needs a long season or an early start indoors. Tennis Ball Lettuce, Heirloom, Organic from $2.00
At one point in history, Tennis Ball Lettuce, dominated the market. It grew even in the darkest of days very well and had a tolerance for the cold. America can thank Bethiah Oliver, Massachusetts seedswoman who imported it to America from the United Kingdom in 1769 There were two strains, white-seeded and black-seeded. The white-seeded strain, popular in the North, matures two weeks earlier and is slightly more bitter than the black-seeded. The southern United States, favored the black-seeded strain. Is it possible they favored it because of its sweetness or their contempt for the northern states?  Additionally at Monticello, Thomas Jefferson grew 15 varieties of lettuce and favored the Tennis Ball for its low maintenance compared to other lettuces.  We are currently stocking Southern Exposure while we wait for the 2026 seeds from Seedsavers. Both are the black seeded variety.  The Seed Savers Exchange - Small rosettes of light green leaves measure only 7" in diameter and form loose tender heads. Grown by Thomas Jefferson at Monticello.
