This variety has a transnational history, originating in the Alsace-Lorraine region of France. It was preserved and maintained by the family of Don Padley of Wisconsin before being introduced to the wider seed-saving community via the Seed Savers Exchange. As a rare heirloom, it represents the specific agricultural traditions of its French origin and its long-term stewardship in the American Midwest.

• Growth Habit: Traditional pole habit; a vigorous climber requiring vertical support.
• Plant Appearance: The plants feature light green leaves and produce pink flowers characterized by a distinct central blotch.
• Pods: The pods are flat, slightly curved, and start as a light green. As they mature, they develop a light pink pattern that becomes more pronounced and vivid when exposed to direct sunlight.
• Seeds: Typically, each pod contains four seeds. The seeds are large, oval, and identified as a "cranberry type" bean.
• Culinary Profile: As a dry bean, Uncle Henry is known for a smooth and creamy texture. The flavor is characterized as sweet and nutty.

• Sowing: Direct sow outdoors in full sun once the soil has warmed and all danger of frost has passed.
• Support: Due to the climbing pole habit, sturdy trellises or poles are necessary to support the vines and keep the pods off the ground.
• Sun Exposure: Full sun is required not only for growth but also to develop the characteristic pink patterning on the pods as they mature.
• Harvesting: For use as a dry bean, allow the pods to remain on the vine until they are fully mature and dry. The resulting large, oval seeds are valued for their creamy texture in soups and stews.
