Spring Planting Bulbs

Safe Shot Pompom Dahlias will provide plenty of blossoms - their miniature ball blossoms will become favorites for your arrangements as they are so easy to work with and look great as a specimin or in a mix with others.  We grow all of the dahlias we offer on our farm in Cashton, Wisconsin.  Pompom Dahlias are wonderful plants that provide structure and continuous color to any garden with minimal effort. They reward gardeners with an abundance of blooms starting in mid to late summer through frost.   Characteristics 30-50” tall (Many people pinch back to encourage a bushier, shorter plant) Blooms are 1-2” wide USDA Zones 8-10 (Hardy in these zones, lift and store in winter in other zones) Summer to Fall Bloom Duration: Continuous Blooms through frost starting in mid to late summer Full Sun to Partial Shade Additional Information Great for Mass Plantings, Borders, and Cutting Gardens. Great for butterflies and other pollinators Ships starting in mid to late March Key Planting Tips We plant dahlia tubers 4-6" deep. We add a few alfafla pellets in the hole and backfill with topsoil amended with compost. We space this variety 18" apart.  We recommend to simply pinch back the shoots after about 3-4 weeks to encourage branching.  You can amend soil with 10-10-10 or something similar. Just make sure the first number (nitrogen) is 5 or 10. You can fertilize every 4 weeks to help achieve larger blossoms. For 90% of us, don’t water until your Dahlia sprouts. If your soil is very dry, water the soil first and then let it stand for 30 minutes before planting. Mulch around your plant leaving bare dirt directly above the tuber. Salmon Star Lilies - If you looking for the classic looks and fragrance of an oriental Lily but want to change it up color wise, this Lily is for you!   Oriental Lilies are probably the most popular type of lily. The fragrant blooms are a favorite in summer.  They are dependable bloomers year after year as long as you provide fertilizer or rich compost when you plant them, right after they bloom and early spring. Skymaster Lily - White liles are timeless and that is why they are so loved as cut flowers.  Skymaster is the first single Oriental Lily to be completely pollenless. These make them great cutflowers! Summer Hyacinth or Galtonia is a wonderful plant that provides interest and long lasting blooms.  Butterflies and bees love it. Deer, rabbits, and other wildlife just let it be. Our Tiny Ink Asiatic Lily is nearly red and black with a similar pattern to Tiny Lion or Tiny Shadow but with a bit of red in it.  Asiatic Lilies are super easy to care for and are dependable bloomers year after year. It blooms incredibly fast and for those with high windows and super short growing seasons, these are fantastic options.  Asiatic Lilies are super easy to care for and are dependable bloomers year after year.
