Anemones: The Whimsical "Windflowers" of the Spring Garden

Anemones, or Windflowers, are beloved for their simple, elegant beauty and their strikingly dark, "panda-eye" centers. At Firefly Farm & Mercantile, we curate premium anemone corms that are selected for their intense color saturation and long, sturdy stems. Whether you are looking for the classic single petals of the De Caen varieties or the lush, multi-layered blooms of the St. Brigid types, these flowers bring a sophisticated, cottage-garden feel to the Driftless Region landscape just as the spring weather begins to warm.

A Pollinator Favorite and Cut Flower Essential

Beyond their beauty in the border, Anemones are a cutting garden masterpiece. They offer an exceptional vase life and a delicate movement that gives them their "Windflower" name. These non-GMO varieties are also highly attractive to early-season pollinators, providing a vital nectar source for bees emerging from winter. Acclimated to our northern climate, our anemones thrive in the cool mornings of a Wisconsin spring, offering a prolific harvest of blooms that look like vibrant garden poppies.

Quick Anemone Growing Facts:

  • Planting Window: In USDA Zones 3-6, plant in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked. In Zones 7-10, they can be planted in the fall for earlier blooms.
  • Hardiness: Reliable cool-season performers; they prefer temperatures between 45°F and 65°F.
  • Sunlight: Requires full sun to partial shade. In the Driftless Region, full sun helps produce the strongest stems.
  • Planting Depth: Plant corms 1-2 inches deep. Don't worry about which end is "up"—these resilient corms will find their way to the surface!
  • Expert Tip (The "Wake Up" Soak): Anemone corms arrive looking like small, dry pebbles. To ensure high germination, soak them in room-temperature water for 4–6 hours before planting. This rehydrates the corm and signals the plant to begin immediate root growth, resulting in faster and more uniform blooming.
