Quick Paperwhite Forcing Facts:
- Planting Window: Indoors from October through February. Stagger your plantings every two weeks for a continuous supply of winter blooms.
- Planting Medium: Highly versatile. They can be grown in standard potting soil, or simply nestled into shallow dishes filled with pea gravel, river stones, or decorative glass marbles.
- Light Requirements: Start them in a cool, dark room (around 60°F) for the first week to establish roots, then move them to your sunniest window once green shoots appear.
- Bloom Time: 4 to 6 weeks from planting. They will remain in peak bloom for 1 to 2 weeks depending on indoor temperatures.
- Expert Tip (The Boozy "Dwarfing" Trick): Indoors, paperwhites can grow tall and "leggy," causing them to flop over. To keep them short and sturdy, use dilute alcohol! Once the green shoots reach 1–2 inches tall, pour off the water and replace it with a 4% to 6% alcohol solution (made by mixing 1 part clear hard liquor like vodka or gin with 7 parts water). The alcohol slightly stunts the stem growth by 30%, keeping the plants short, compact, and upright without affecting the size or quality of the blossoms!
