Bearded Irises are extremely hardy perennials that excel in full sun and well-drained soils.

1. Timing: Plant rhizomes in late summer through early autumn. This allows roots to establish before the ground freezes so plants can burst into bloom the following spring.
2. Soil & Site Selection: Choose a sunny location with sharp soil drainage. Irises dislike "wet feet" and heavy standing water.
3. The "Shallow" Planting Rule: Crucial Step: Do not bury rhizomes deep! Dig a shallow hole, build a small ridge of soil in the center, fan out the roots down the sides of the ridge, and cover the roots with soil. The top 1/3 of the firm rhizome should sit right at or slightly above the soil surface to bake in the sun.
4. Watering: Water thoroughly at planting. Once established, irises are remarkably drought-tolerant and require minimal supplemental watering.
5. Dividing: Every 3 to 4 years, dig up and divide crowded iris clumps in mid-summer to maintain peak bloom size and vigor.
