Black Hollyhock: The Historic "Dark-Blood" Heirloom Bring a sense of gothic elegance and historic intrigue to your garden with the Black Hollyhock (Alcea rosea). At Firefly Farm & Mercantile, we are honored to offer this striking variety, which has enchanted gardeners for centuries. With its single, open-faced blooms in a shade so deep it borders on black, this hollyhock is a breathtaking vertical accent that bridges the gap between folklore and classic botanical beauty. 📜 A Deep-Rooted Historical Record This variety carries a legacy that reaches back to the golden age of English botany. The 1629 Description: This rare, single-flowered hollyhock was famously documented in 1629 by the renowned English botanist John Parkinson. In his seminal work, Paradisi in Sole Paradisus Terrestris, he captured the intensity of its color, describing the petals as being “of a darke red like blackblood.” The Apothecary’s Choice: Historically, dark-flowered hollyhocks were highly sought after by apothecaries and herbalists. The intense pigment was prized for its potential use in tinctures and dyes, as well as for its striking visual presence in the medicinal gardens of the 17th century. The "Sentinel" of the Garden: Standing 5 to 6 feet tall, these plants have served as the sentinels of the English cottage garden for generations, providing a dramatic vertical anchor that remains unrivaled in color depth. 🎨 Visual & Botanical Profile Black Hollyhock is a plant of refined simplicity and deep, moody color. The Blooms: These are classic, single-flowered hollyhocks. They feature wide, saucer-shaped petals that open fully to reveal a contrasting, bright-gold center. The petals themselves are a rich, velvety maroon-black—a "black-blood" hue that absorbs the light and provides a sophisticated contrast to lighter perennials. The Habit: A stately giant reaching 5–6 feet tall, it maintains an upright, columnar habit. The single blooms are airy and delicate, allowing the plant to sway gracefully in the breeze rather than becoming top-heavy. The Foliage: Large, coarse, and handsome, the leaves create a lush backdrop that remains a deep green throughout the growing season. 🌿 Garden Performance & Technical Specifications As a self-seeding biennial, this hollyhock is a master of naturalizing. It will spend its first year building a strong rosette of foliage and its second year erupting into a towering display of color. Garden Bed Coverage: One packet from Firefly Farm & Mercantile provides enough seed to populate a 37.5 square foot bed (roughly 15' long by 30" wide) with a striking, dark-bloomed border. Feature Technical Specification Plant Type Self-Seeding Biennial (Alcea rosea) Planting Density Space plants 18–24 inches apart Height 5–6 Feet Coverage 1 Packet per 37.5 sq. ft. Sun Requirement Full Sun Bloom Period Mid-Summer through Autumn ✨ Why We Love It "The Black Hollyhock is the ultimate 'moody' heirloom. We love it because the color isn't just dark—it's a rich, living velvet. When the morning sun hits those dark-red petals, they seem to glow from within. It’s a plant that connects us directly to the 1600s, and because it self-seeds, it will happily live in your garden for generations, returning each year to provide that classic, towering beauty." 👨🌾 Cultivation & Self-Seeding Tips Sowing: Direct-sow in early spring or late summer. Press the seeds into the soil surface, as they require light to germinate. The Biennial Cycle: Remember that as a biennial, these plants focus on leaf growth in year one and bloom in year two. If you sow a fresh batch each year, you'll have a continuous cycle of blooms every season! Naturalizing: Let the tall flower spikes drop their seeds in the late autumn. You’ll be rewarded with new "volunteer" rosettes throughout your garden each spring, which you can easily transplant to your favorite sunny spots.

PRIVACY POLICY

If for any reason you are not happy with a purchase, please email us at andre@fireflyfarmandmercantile.com so we can assist. We do provide refunds up to 10 days of you receiving merchandise. We may ask for the product to be returned to be eligible for a refund. We do not do refunds for shipping unless it is something we feel we could have done better. Carriers often don’t deliver based on their own timelines but you can always pick up at our garden shop too. Unlike most online garden online retailers we have a business location too, so come in out and visit our farm.

REFUND POLICY

Shipping Policy:
Seasonal Availability: We typically have more than one season of products available to order. We separate these at time of fulfillment. Shipping is typically collected for the shipment leaving the soonest. If you have a small number of seeds, we can ship that Business 1st Class for a fee under $3 but it will not have tracking. For other items ordered that will come later like pre-ordered items, we will send you a shipping invoice to pay before your merchandise arrives. You can email us at Andre@fireflyfarmandmercantile.com and we can help.
Pre-calculated weights:
Sometimes the products purchased may weigh more or less than the calculated shipping rate. We try our best to determine the weights based on current and past inventory. We do provide refunds proactively and will communicate accordingly.
We try our best to offer the right services for you at checkout. If we see an opportunity for a more desirable service we will reach out to you. Please ensure we have a good contact number or email so we can do so.
United States Postal Service and UPS services go out Monday through Friday. This allows us to ensure we provide a quality product at a reasonable rate. Any delivery times are just estimates from the carrier once they receive the package. We cannot change this due to Shopify’s policy. I would if I could as it can lead to some confusion.
We are a small garden shop and have very little pull with any carrier (and seriously who really does with USPS or any other). For the most part UPS timelines have been the most consistent. But there are not delivery dates but days your package will be in transit once we drop it off. In average we take 1-4 business days to fulfill orders and then the carrier’s approximate shipping times are added to that.

SHIPPING POLICY

We accept various forms for payment. Currently we accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express as well as Google Pay and Shop Pay.
We strive to deliver on what we say we are going to do. Pre-orders are orders that are being taken without inventory on hand. The advantage is you get a great price, but sometimes crops just don't yield what is expected. We will use many different suppliers to fulfill your orders as best as possible. We won't substitute without your permission so please make sure you leave your best contact information so we can reach out to you. On occasion if unable to reach you, we will simply send the substitute product but you are welcome to call us once receiving it and letting us know you’d like a refund on it.
