The Blue Bachelor Button (Centaurea cyanus) is native to the fields and meadows of Europe. Historically, it grew so abundantly in grain fields that it earned the name "Cornflower."

The name "Bachelor Button" comes from an old folklore tradition: young men in love would wear a blossom in their buttonhole. If the flower stayed bright and fresh, it signaled that their love was reciprocated; if it faded quickly, the romance was destined to fail. Beyond folklore, the flower achieved royal status in the 19th century as the favorite flower of Queen Louise of Prussia and later became the national symbol of Estonia and Germany. Today, it remains the gold standard for the "Cornflower Blue" color used by artists and fashion designers worldwide.

1. Sowing the Seeds (Direct Sow is Best):
Bachelor Buttons are exceptionally easy to grow from seed and prefer to be sown directly into the garden.

• When: Sow in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked. For an even earlier bloom, sow in the fall (in Zones 6-10); the seeds will overwinter and sprout at the first sign of spring.
• Depth: Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep. They require darkness to germinate.
• Preparation: Clear the area of weeds. These plants are unfussy and will grow in average to poor soil.

2. Choosing a Spot:
Select a location with full sun. While they can tolerate very light shade, they will produce the sturdiest stems and the most flowers in the brightest spot available.

3. Maintenance:

• Spacing: Thin seedlings to 6–10 inches apart.
• Watering: Water regularly until established. Once mature, Bachelor Buttons are remarkably drought-tolerant.
• Deadheading: To keep the plants blooming all summer, remove the faded flower heads promptly. This prevents the plant from going to seed and encourages a continuous flush of blue.
• Support: Tall plants may occasionally "flop" after a heavy rain. Planting them in dense groups allows them to support one another, or you can use a simple twine-and-stake system.

To use as a garnish, pull the individual "petals" (florets) away from the central seed head. Sprinkle them over white-frosted cupcakes or summer fruit salads for a sophisticated, professional look. They can also be dried and added to homemade "Confetti" or potpourri.
