Figleaf Hollyhock: The Towering Architectural Classic Bring the timeless romance of a classic cottage garden to your landscape with the Figleaf Hollyhock (Alcea ficifolia). At Firefly Farm & Mercantile, we adore this variety for its grand scale and its unique, deeply lobed foliage—which resembles the leaves of a fig tree, hence the name. Unlike standard hollyhocks, the Figleaf variety is celebrated for its exceptional vigor, its rust resistance, and a brilliant, sun-drenched palette of vibrant yellows, soft pinks, and rich, saturated reds. 📜 A Heritage of Vigor & Rust Resistance Hollyhocks have been the iconic vertical accent of European and American gardens for centuries, but they are often plagued by hollyhock rust (a fungal disease that causes orange-brown spots on the leaves). The Figleaf Hollyhock is the gardener's solution. The "Rust-Free" Heirloom: One of the primary reasons this variety is so highly sought after by expert gardeners is its natural resistance to hollyhock rust. While common hollyhocks often succumb to unsightly fungal spotting by mid-summer, the Figleaf variety stays lush, green, and vibrant from the ground all the way to the top of the spike. The "Figleaf" Distinction: While many hollyhocks have large, rounded, heart-shaped leaves, the Alcea ficifolia is distinguished by its deeply cut, palmate foliage. This adds an extra layer of structural interest to the garden, providing a healthy green canvas that remains attractive all season long. A Gardener’s Landmark: Traditionally planted against sunny cottage walls or fences, these plants were used to mark the transition between the garden and the home. They are a "statement" plant, demanding attention with their soaring, flower-laden spikes. 🎨 Visual & Botanical Profile Figleaf Hollyhocks are built for drama. They provide the ultimate vertical anchor for any perennial border. The Blooms: These plants produce tall, majestic spires packed with large, saucer-shaped blossoms. You can expect a stunning, kaleidoscopic mix of colors, including luminous yellows, classic petal-pinks, and deep, fiery reds. The Foliage: The leaves are large, handsome, and deeply lobed, creating a much more intricate texture than the common hollyhock. The Habit: These are true giants of the garden, often reaching 6 to 8 feet in height. They are remarkably sturdy and provide an unmatched vertical element to your garden design. 🌿 Garden Performance & Technical Specifications Figleaf Hollyhocks are robust, short-lived perennials that are famous for their ability to self-sow, ensuring you have a steady supply of these garden sentinels year after year. Garden Bed Coverage: One packet from Firefly Farm & Mercantile provides enough seed to populate a 20 square foot bed (roughly an 8' to 10' long by 2.5' wide garden bed) or to create a dramatic 10-foot long back-of-border row. Feature Technical Specification Plant Type Short-Lived Perennial (Alcea ficifolia) Planting Density Space plants 18–24 inches apart Height 6–8 Feet (Towering) Disease Resistance Excellent (Rust Resistant) Coverage 1 Packet per 20 sq. ft. Sun Requirement Full Sun Bloom Period Mid-Summer through Early Autumn ✨ Why We Love It "Figleaf Hollyhocks are the ultimate 'backdrop' flower. We love them because they bring a sense of height and vertical drama that nothing else can achieve. The fact that they resist rust makes them a true joy—you get that lush, towering cottage look without the heartbreak of spotting leaves that ruins other varieties. It’s a clean, healthy, and heavy-duty display that makes the whole garden feel lush." 👨🌾 Cultivation Tips Sowing: Direct-sow in early spring or late summer. These seeds need light to germinate, so press them into the surface of the soil and barely cover them. Staking: In very windy or exposed areas, you may want to provide a tall stake or a simple twine support to keep the heavy spires standing perfectly upright. Self-Sowing: If you want them to return every year, leave the dried stalks standing until they drop their seeds in the fall. You'll find "volunteers" popping up next spring, which you can easily move to your desired location.

PRIVACY POLICY

If for any reason you are not happy with a purchase, please email us at andre@fireflyfarmandmercantile.com so we can assist. We do provide refunds up to 10 days of you receiving merchandise. We may ask for the product to be returned to be eligible for a refund. We do not do refunds for shipping unless it is something we feel we could have done better. Carriers often don’t deliver based on their own timelines but you can always pick up at our garden shop too. Unlike most online garden online retailers we have a business location too, so come in out and visit our farm.

REFUND POLICY

Shipping Policy:
Seasonal Availability: We typically have more than one season of products available to order. We separate these at time of fulfillment. Shipping is typically collected for the shipment leaving the soonest. If you have a small number of seeds, we can ship that Business 1st Class for a fee under $3 but it will not have tracking. For other items ordered that will come later like pre-ordered items, we will send you a shipping invoice to pay before your merchandise arrives. You can email us at Andre@fireflyfarmandmercantile.com and we can help.
Pre-calculated weights:
Sometimes the products purchased may weigh more or less than the calculated shipping rate. We try our best to determine the weights based on current and past inventory. We do provide refunds proactively and will communicate accordingly.
We try our best to offer the right services for you at checkout. If we see an opportunity for a more desirable service we will reach out to you. Please ensure we have a good contact number or email so we can do so.
United States Postal Service and UPS services go out Monday through Friday. This allows us to ensure we provide a quality product at a reasonable rate. Any delivery times are just estimates from the carrier once they receive the package. We cannot change this due to Shopify’s policy. I would if I could as it can lead to some confusion.
We are a small garden shop and have very little pull with any carrier (and seriously who really does with USPS or any other). For the most part UPS timelines have been the most consistent. But there are not delivery dates but days your package will be in transit once we drop it off. In average we take 1-4 business days to fulfill orders and then the carrier’s approximate shipping times are added to that.

SHIPPING POLICY

We accept various forms for payment. Currently we accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express as well as Google Pay and Shop Pay.
We strive to deliver on what we say we are going to do. Pre-orders are orders that are being taken without inventory on hand. The advantage is you get a great price, but sometimes crops just don't yield what is expected. We will use many different suppliers to fulfill your orders as best as possible. We won't substitute without your permission so please make sure you leave your best contact information so we can reach out to you. On occasion if unable to reach you, we will simply send the substitute product but you are welcome to call us once receiving it and letting us know you’d like a refund on it.
