Marvel of Peru Four O'Clocks Flower - 15th Century Heirloom

Mirabilis jalapa is a storied traveler with deep roots in the Aztec Empire. Native to the tropical regions of Peru and Mexico, it was highly prized by the Aztecs for its medicinal properties and its spectacular evening fragrance.

The plant was brought to Europe in 1540 and was immediately dubbed the "Marvel of Peru" because of its strange ability to produce different colored flowers on the same plant—and sometimes even different colored sectors on a single flower. Historically, it became a staple of the Victorian "Scented Garden." Gardeners would plant them near porches and parlor windows so that the sweet, citrusy-floral perfume could waft into the home as the air cooled in the evening.

1. Sowing the Seeds:
Four O'Clock seeds are large, dark, and easy to handle, making them a great project for beginning gardeners.

• When: Direct sow outdoors after the last frost has passed and the soil is warm.
• Preparation: For faster germination, soak the hard seeds in warm water for 12–24 hours before planting.
• Depth: Sow seeds 1/2 inch deep.
• Germination: Expect sprouts in 7–14 days.

2. Choosing a Location:
The best spot for Four O'Clocks is near a patio, walkway, or seating area where you can enjoy the evening fragrance. They thrive in Full Sun but actually prefer Partial Shade in very hot climates, which may even encourage the flowers to open a little earlier in the day.

3. Maintenance:

• Spacing: Thin seedlings to 12–24 inches apart. They grow into dense, hedge-like bushes.
• Watering: Water regularly until established. While they can handle drought, they will produce more flowers if the soil is kept moderately moist.
• Self-Sowing: Four O'Clocks are prolific self-seeders. If you don't want "volunteers" next year, simply clear away the large seeds from the ground in the fall.
• Overwintering: In Zones 7 and colder, the plant will die back with the frost. However, you can dig up the carrot-like tubers in the fall, store them in a cool, dry place, and replant them in the spring—just like Dahlias!
