The Mission Bells variety is a refined selection of the wild California Poppy, which is native to the grassy slopes and coastal hills of the American West. The species was first documented by European explorers in the early 1800s, who were so struck by the glowing hillsides that they named the region "The Land of Fire."

The "Mission Bells" name pays homage to the historic Spanish missions that dot the California landscape. Just as the bells of the missions once signaled the change of seasons, these poppies herald the arrival of spring and early summer.
