Blossoms are blue.

Seed Count is 50 Organic Seeds

📜 A Victorian Cottage Icon

Nigella has been a staple in European gardens since the Elizabethan era, prized for its unique, otherworldly appearance.

  • The "Mist" Explained: The plant earns its "Love-in-a-Mist" moniker from the fine, thread-like bracts that surround each flower. These hair-like structures create a soft, hazy "mist" that makes the blooms appear as though they are floating in mid-air.
  • The Seed Pod Drama: The beauty of Nigella doesn't end when the petals fall. The plant produces highly architectural, balloon-like seed pods that are just as prized by floral designers as the flowers themselves. Once dried, these pods add a sculptural element to winter bouquets.
  • A "Volunteer" Favorite: Historically, Nigella was beloved because it is a prolific self-sower. Gardeners of the 19th century would plant it once and enjoy its return year after year, as the plant would naturally scatter its seeds to create a "drifting" effect through the flower beds.
🎨 Visual & Botanical Profile

Nigella is a plant of texture and fine detail, offering a cooling, airy aesthetic to balance out bolder garden staples.

  • The Blooms: The flowers are dainty and star-shaped, typically appearing in shades of soft blue, powder white, or dusty rose, depending on the variety. They possess a complex structure that invites a closer look.
  • The Foliage: The finely cut, feathery leaves are almost fern-like in appearance, providing a soft, mossy texture that stays beautiful from early spring right through the heat of summer.
  • The Habit: Growing to 18–24 inches tall, Nigella is an ideal "bridge" plant. Its airy nature allows it to tuck perfectly between sturdier perennials or tall-growing annuals, softening the overall look of your garden landscape.

✨ Why We Love It

"Nigella is the 'poet' of the garden. We love it because it fills in all the awkward gaps in a flower border with its lacy, green mist. It’s incredibly easy to grow—you just toss the seeds on the soil in early spring and let them do their thing. Plus, the transition from the delicate blue petals to those fascinating, striped seed pods makes it feel like you’re growing two different plants in one!"

👨🌾 Cultivation & "Everlasting" Tips
  • Sowing: Direct-sow seeds in early spring or late autumn (in mild climates). These seeds need a bit of darkness to germinate, so cover them with about ¼ inch of soil.
  • Succession Planting: Because Nigella has a relatively short bloom window, we recommend sowing a new batch every 3 weeks to keep a continuous cloud of color through the summer.
  • Drying: To save the famous seed pods, harvest them when they are fully formed but still green/striped. Hang them upside down in a dark, dry space; they will harden as they dry, making for a perfect winter craft supply.
