It doesn't seem to be plagued my mildew and it is not bothered by bugs, it just keeps producing all summer long. A lighter speckled green zuchinni with ribbed edges. We enjoy harvesting at almost all sizes from 6" to 12" long. This a zuchinni that we actually plant twice as we cannot get enough of it. We source from various companies to keep this one on our shelf. The "Ferrari" of Summer Squash Widely considered by chefs and heirloom aficionados to be the best-tasting zucchini in the world, the Costata Romanesco is in a league of its own. Its name literally translates to "Ribbed Roman," a nod to its distinctive fluted edges and its deep Italian heritage. This is not your average grocery store squash; it is a gourmet masterpiece featuring a rich, nutty flavor, a firm texture that never turns to mush, and a stunning "star" shape when sliced. 📜 Historical Heritage & Origin The Costata Romanesco is an ancient Italian Heirloom from the Lazio region around Rome. It belongs to the Cocozelle group of squashes, which have been cultivated in Italy for centuries. While most modern zucchini were bred for machine harvesting and uniform "log" shapes, the Romanesco was bred for the plate. Italian gardeners selected this variety for its superior culinary qualities and its ability to produce an abundance of large, sturdy male blossoms—a staple of Italian cuisine (traditionally stuffed with ricotta and fried). When to Plant:Zucchini are heat-lovers. Direct sow seeds outdoors only after the soil has warmed to at least 70°F and all danger of frost has passed. 2. Give it Room:Unlike compact hybrid zucchinis, the Costata Romanesco is a vigorous grower. Spacing: Plant seeds or transplants 3 feet apart. The plants can easily spread 4–5 feet wide. Mounds: Many gardeners prefer "hill planting"—sowing 2–3 seeds in a small mound of soil, then thinning to the strongest plant. 3. Soil & Fertilization: Squash are "heavy feeders." Prepare your bed with a generous amount of compost or aged manure. Keep the soil consistently moist. Mulching around the base of the plant helps retain moisture and keeps the heavy fruits off the direct dirt. 4. Pollination:Like all squash, this variety has separate male and female flowers on the same plant and relies on bees for pollination. If you see fruit shriveling and falling off early, it may be due to poor pollination; encourage bees by planting flowers like Zinnias or Borage nearby! 5. Harvesting: For Flavor: Harvest the "ribbed" fruits when they are between 6 and 10 inches long. While they remain edible even when they grow quite large, the flavor is most intense when they are young. Costata Romanesco Zucchini, 1600's Heirloom and a Firefly Favorite - A favorite of ours! This squash or zucchini thrives all across America.  It doesn't seem to be plagued my mildew and it is not bothered by bugs, it just keeps producing all summer long. A lighter speckled green zuchinni with ribbed edges. We enjoy harvesting at almost all sizes from 6" to 12" long. This a zuchinni that we actually plant twice as we cannot get enough of it.  We source from various companies to keep this one on our shelf.

Its name literally translates to "Ribbed Roman," a nod to its distinctive fluted edges and its deep Italian heritage. This is not your average grocery store squash; it is a gourmet masterpiece featuring a rich, nutty flavor, a firm texture that never turns to mush, and a stunning "star" shape when sliced.

The Costata Romanesco is an ancient Italian Heirloom from the Lazio region around Rome. It belongs to the Cocozelle group of squashes, which have been cultivated in Italy for centuries.
While most modern zucchini were bred for machine harvesting and uniform "log" shapes, the Romanesco was bred for the plate. Italian gardeners selected this variety for its superior culinary qualities and its ability to produce an abundance of large, sturdy male blossoms—a staple of Italian cuisine (traditionally stuffed with ricotta and fried). It remains a symbol of the traditional Roman kitchen garden (orto) and has gained a cult following globally among organic farmers and farm-to-table chefs.

1. When to Plant: Zucchini are heat-lovers. Direct sow seeds outdoors only after the soil has warmed to at least 70°F and all danger of frost has passed.
2. Give it Room: Unlike compact hybrid zucchinis, the Costata Romanesco is a vigorous grower.

Spacing: Plant seeds or transplants 3 feet apart. The plants can easily spread 4–5 feet wide.</li>

Mounds: Many gardeners prefer "hill planting"—sowing 2–3 seeds in a small mound of soil, then thinning to the strongest plant.</li>

3. Soil &amp; Fertilization:

<li data-line="45">Squash are "heavy feeders." Prepare your bed with a generous amount of compost or aged manure.</li>
<li data-line="46">Keep the soil consistently moist. Mulching around the base of the plant helps retain moisture and keeps the heavy fruits off the direct dirt.</li>

4. Pollination: Like all squash, this variety has separate male and female flowers on the same plant and relies on bees for pollination. If you see fruit shriveling and falling off early, it may be due to poor pollination; encourage bees by planting flowers like Zinnias or Borage nearby!

The ribs on the Costata Romanesco aren't just for looks—they give the squash a "bite" and structural integrity. It is the absolute best variety for grilling, as it holds its shape on the grates, and it is superior for "Zoodles" (zucchini noodles) because it doesn't release as much liquid as other varieties.

PRIVACY POLICY

If for any reason you are not happy with a purchase, please email us at andre@fireflyfarmandmercantile.com so we can assist.&nbsp; We do provide refunds up to 10 days of you receiving merchandise. We may ask for the product to be returned to be eligible for a refund. We do not do refunds for shipping unless it is something we feel we could have done better. Carriers often don’t deliver based on their own timelines but you can always pick up at our garden shop too. Unlike most online garden retailers we have a business location too, so come in out and visit our farm.

REFUND POLICY

Sometimes the products purchased may weigh more or less than the calculated shipping rate. We try our best to determine the weights based on current and past inventory.&nbsp; We do provide refunds proactively and will communicate accordingly. And in some instances we may need to contact you for additional payment if the shipping warrants it.&nbsp;
We try our best to offer the right services for you at checkout. If we see an opportunity for a more desirable service we will reach out to you. Please ensure we have a good contact number or email&nbsp; so we can do so.&nbsp;
United States Postal Service and UPS services go out Monday through Friday. This allows us to ensure we provide a quality product at a reasonable rate. Any delivery times are just estimates from the carrier once they receive the package. We cannot change this due to Shopify’s policy. I would if I could as it can lead to some confusion. We are a small garden shop and have very little pull with any carrier (and seriously who really does with USPS or any other). For the most part UPS timelines have been the most consistent. But there are not delivery dates but days your package will be in transit once we drop it off. In average we take 1-4 business days to fulfill orders and then the carrier’s approximate shipping times are added to that.&nbsp;

SHIPPING POLICY

We accept various forms for payment. Currently we accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express as well as Google Pay and Shop Pay.
We strive to deliver on what we say we are going to do. Pre-orders are orders that are being taken without inventory on hand. The advantage is you get a great price, but sometimes crops just don't yield what is expected. We will use many different suppliers to fulfill your orders as best as possible. We won't substitute without your permission so please make sure you leave your best contact information so we can reach out to you. On occasion if unable to reach you, we will simply send the substitute product but you are welcome to call us once receiving it and letting us know you’d like a refund on it.
