Painted Daisy, 1800's Heirloom

The Painted Daisy (Chrysanthemum carinatum, now often classified as Ismelia carinata) is a storied heirloom native to the sun-drenched hillsides of North Africa, specifically Morocco.

It was first introduced to European gardeners in the late 18th century (around 1796). It quickly became a sensation during the Victorian era, where gardeners were captivated by its "Tricolor" nature—a rarity in the daisy world. Historically, it was prized for "carpet bedding" and "ribbon borders," where its bold, contrasting circles of color were used to create high-impact, artistic designs in public parks and private estates. Today, it remains a favorite for those seeking an "old-fashioned" look with a modern, graphic edge.

1. Sowing the Seeds:
Painted Daisies are very easy to grow and can be started indoors for an earlier show or direct-sown in the garden.

• Indoors: Start 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Sow seeds on the surface of a moist starting mix and cover very lightly with 1/8 inch of soil.
• Outdoors: Direct sow in early spring as soon as the danger of frost has passed.
• Germination: Expect sprouts in 10–15 days at temperatures of 65–70°F.

2. Choosing a Location:
Painted Daisies demand Full Sun. While they are adaptable to many soil types, they must have excellent drainage. They are perfectly suited for the middle or back of a mixed border where their height can be fully appreciated.

3. Maintenance:

• Spacing: Thin or transplant seedlings to 12–18 inches apart.
• Pinching for Bushiness: When the plants are about 6–8 inches tall, pinch off the central growing tip. This encourages the plant to branch out from the base, resulting in a much sturdier plant with significantly more flowers.
• Watering: Water at the base of the plant to keep the foliage dry. While moderately drought-tolerant, they will bloom more profusely with consistent moisture.
• Deadheading: To keep the "Painted" display going all summer, remove faded flowers promptly. This prevents the plant from putting energy into seed production.

Painted Daisies look spectacular when planted alongside solid-colored flowers that echo the colors in their "rings." Try planting them with Dark Red Zinnias, Yellow Coreopsis, or the silver-blue foliage of Hyssop for a high-contrast, professional look.
