The Purple Hyacinth Bean is an ancient heirloom with roots tracing back to Africa and India, where it has been cultivated for thousands of years as both an ornamental and a food crop.

In American history, it is famously associated with Thomas Jefferson. He was so captivated by its beauty that he planted it at Monticello in 1804. By the Victorian era, it had become a staple of the "romantic garden," prized for its ability to quickly provide shade and privacy for porches and gazebos. While it is grown as a primary pulse (bean) crop in many parts of the world, in the West it is cherished as a premier ornamental that brings a touch of historical grandeur to the modern landscape.

You may recognize this plant by its older name, Dolichos lablab. While botanists have recently updated its name to Lablab purpureus, it remains the same beloved heirloom climber that has graced historic gardens for centuries.

1. Sowing the Seeds:
Like most beans, the Hyacinth Bean loves warm soil and does not like being moved.

• When: Direct sow outdoors only after the soil has thoroughly warmed and all danger of frost is long gone.
• Preparation: For faster germination, soak the hard seeds in warm water for 12–24 hours before planting.
• Depth: Sow seeds 1 inch deep.
• Germination: Expect sprouts in 7–14 days.

2. The Perfect Spot:
Select a location with Full Sun. This vine needs a sturdy support system from the very beginning. A chain-link fence, a strong wooden arbor, or a tall cattle panel are ideal.

3. Maintenance:

• Spacing: Thin seedlings to 12 inches apart at the base of your support.
• Watering: Water regularly until established. Once the vines begin to climb, they are quite drought-tolerant, though consistent moisture leads to more flowers.
• Avoid Over-Fertilizing: Too much nitrogen will give you a massive green vine but very few of those beautiful purple flowers and pods.

While this plant is grown for food in some cultures, the raw mature beans and pods are toxic. They contain cyanogenic glycosides and must be boiled in multiple changes of water to be made safe for consumption. We recommend growing this variety strictly as a stunning ornamental to avoid any risk.
