Santa Lucia Sunflower, Heirloom Italian Sunflower

The Santa Lucia sunflower is a cherished Italian Heirloom. In Italian tradition, Saint Lucia is the patron saint of light and vision, and her feast day was historically associated with the winter solstice.

Gardeners named this specific sunflower variety in her honor because of its brilliant, light-reflecting golden petals and its "generous" nature. While "Giant" sunflowers were bred for massive single heads to produce oil and seeds, the Santa Lucia lineage was selected by Mediterranean farmers for its ornamental and social value. It was bred to be a "bouquet maker"—a plant that could be tucked into the corner of a vegetable garden and provide fresh flowers for the kitchen table and the local church all summer long.

Because Santa Lucia is a branching annuus variety, it offers a much longer "service life" to your local ecosystem than single-stem varieties:
