Scarlet Sage - Southern Native

The Scarlet Sage is a true North American Native, with a historical range stretching across the Southwest—from the sun-baked plains of Texas and New Mexico—down into Mexico and across the Gulf Coast.

Unlike the squat, hybridized "bedding" salvias found in big-box stores, Salvia coccinea is the original wild species. It was first documented by European botanists in the late 1700s, but it has been a cornerstone of the Southwestern ecosystem for millennia. Indigenous peoples and early settlers valued it for its incredible resilience; it is a plant that evolved to thrive in heat, withstand periods of drought, and reseed itself year after year, ensuring the "blood-red" splashes of color never vanished from the landscape.

1. Sowing the Seeds:
Scarlet Sage seeds require light to germinate, so do not bury them deep.

• Indoors: Start 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Surface-sow seeds and press them lightly into the soil.
• Outdoors: Direct sow after the danger of frost has passed. Scatter seeds on cleared soil and walk over them to ensure good "seed-to-soil" contact.

2. The Perfect Spot:
This is one of the few plants that is truly versatile. It thrives in full sun but is unique among salvias for its ability to bloom beautifully in partial shade. It prefers well-draining soil but is famously unfussy about soil quality.

3. Maintenance:

• Watering: Water regularly until the plant is about 6 inches tall. After that, it is quite drought-tolerant.
• Deadheading: While not strictly necessary, cutting back the spent flower spikes will encourage the plant to send up even more blooms and keep the plant looking tidy.

4. Encouraging Volunteers:
If you want the plants to return next year, leave the last few flower spikes of the season on the plant. They will drop seeds that will overwinter in the soil and pop up naturally when the ground warms in the spring.

Scarlet Sage has a "see-through" airy quality. Plant it in large drifts behind shorter, mounding flowers like Yellow Zinnias or White Alyssum. The red-and-yellow combination is a classic Southwestern color palette that looks spectacular against a blue summer sky.
