Sunshine Sweet Corn, Open Pollinated Sweetness

Sunshine Sweet Corm is an open-pollinated (OP) yellow sweet corn (Zea mays) variety, celebrated for its exceptional flavor, tenderness, and reliability in short-season climates. It's a favorite among organic gardeners and seed savers for producing hybrid-quality ears without F1 dependency.

We have enjoyed this one before and it will be our first year trialing at Firefly Farm. In 2026, our growing garden will exhibit various corns and collards.

• Breeder: Primarily selected by John Navazio and the Organic Seed Alliance, building on open pollinated sweet corn genetics.
• Timeline:
  1. Developed in the late 1990s–early 2000s through mass selection from elite sugary enhanced (se) yellow lines.
  2. Stabilized for earliness and taste via multi-year trials in the U.S. Northeast and Midwest.
  3. Released commercially around 2005–2010 via Johnny's Selected Seeds and OP-focused catalogs.
