Tall White Sweet Alyssum, Heirloom

Sweet Alyssum is a storied heirloom native to the Mediterranean region, specifically the coastal areas of France, Italy, and the Canary Islands. Its species name, maritima, refers to its love for the sea breezes and sandy soils of the coast.

Historically, it has been a garden staple since the 16th century. In the "Language of Flowers" popular during the Victorian era, Alyssum symbolized "worth beyond beauty," a nod to its incredible fragrance and medicinal uses. While it was once used in folk medicine to treat rabies (the name Alyssum comes from the Greek a- (not) and lyssa (rage/madness)), its most enduring legacy is as the backbone of the English cottage garden, where it has been used for centuries to soften stone paths and perfume evening walks.

While gardeners love it for its scent, organic farmers prize Tall White Sweet Alyssum as one of the most effective beneficial insect attractants in nature.

• The Aphid Hunter: The tiny white flowers are a primary food source for Syrphid flies (Hoverflies). These flies lay their eggs near aphid colonies; once the larvae hatch, they feast on aphids, providing natural, chemical-free pest control for your roses and vegetables.
• Honeybee Haven: Its long bloom season and accessible nectar make it a reliable food source for honeybees and small native bees from spring through the first frost.
• Parasitic Wasps: It attracts tiny, non-stinging parasitic wasps that help control caterpillars and other garden pests.

• Legendary Fragrance: Fills the air with the scent of fresh honey, especially on warm, humid afternoons.

1. Sowing the Seeds (Direct Sow is Best):
Alyssum is incredibly easy to grow and has a high germination rate.

• When: Direct sow outdoors in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked. In milder climates, sow in the fall for winter and spring blooms.
• Depth: Surface sow and press firmly into the soil. Do not cover the seeds, as they require light to germinate.
• Germination: Expect sprouts in 5–10 days.

2. The Perfect Location:
Tall White Alyssum loves Full Sun but is one of the few flowers that will bloom profusely in Partial Shade. It is unfussy about soil quality but requires excellent drainage. It is the perfect "filler" to plant at the feet of "leggy" plants like Roses or Clematis.

3. Maintenance:

• Spacing: Thin seedlings to 6–8 inches apart. They will quickly grow together to form a solid, flowering mound.
• Watering: Water regularly until established. While somewhat drought-tolerant, Alyssum will stop blooming if the soil becomes bone-dry for too long.
• The "Summer Haircut": If the plants begin to look tired or "scraggly" in the heat of mid-summer, shear them back by half. They will respond with a fresh flush of green leaves and a massive new round of honey-scented flowers in just a few weeks!

Tall White Alyssum is the "white lace" of the garden. It looks spectacular when paired with bold-colored flowers like Blue Bachelor Buttons or Red Poppies. Because of its scent, always plant a few handfuls of seeds near your front door or a patio bench where the fragrance can be fully enjoyed.
