Firefly Farm & Mercantile - Eastern Red Columbine is native to the central and eastern Untied States. It is a late spring to early summer flowering perennial. Bees and other polliantors rely on these woodland species for valuable nectar and pollen. This is very abundant at Firefly Farm & Mercantile. You would see this along our Wild Flower Trail in mid May to mid June typically. They are 10-18” tall and will casually reseed to keep an abundance of blooms going for years to come. The flowers face downwards and have longer spurs that form the classic combine curl. The self-sowing variety prefers even moisture and grows best in full sun to partial shade, ideally with afternoon shade in hot climates. Perennial. Botanical name: Aquilegia canadensis Perennial Full sun to partial shade is optimal Instructions: Sow seeds outdoors when the ground can be worked, best to sow in fall and let nature care for the cold stratification. Spotted Joe Pye Weed is a one often preferred for gardnes that its relative, Joe Pye Weed, as it is half the size coming up 4-6'. It loves the moist to wet soils inlcuding clay, loam or sand. It is one again that is underserving of weed in its name as its not aggressvie in seeding out. It does grow into large clumps that are able to be divided depsite the deep roots it sends out. This is a must for any butterfly, pollinator or wildlife garden as it attracts numerous amounts of butteflies, bees and pollinators. Bumblebees will use this for cover so if you are workign on helping rare bumblee species, this is a good plant that should be part of your plan. It's native range is the Midwest, but due to its non-aggressive nature it has been introduced in gardens and restoration projects across much of the the United States. Most gardeners will divide this to increase its numbers or collect seed to moist stratify. Current Supply is limited, more to arrive in January - Switchgrass 'Dacotah' Grass is a warm-season native bunchgrass that can be found in the throughout most of North America and is dominant species in Tallgrass Prairies. The Dacotah cultivar is from North Dakota. It is a little shorter and has some finer leaves. It prefers drier soils.  It is used in projects to help control erosion, meadows, and prairies reclamation.  It is used by many types of wildlife for food and cover. 
This is a very hardy perennial and easily survives down to USDA Zone 3, can be found in zones 3-10 and prefers drier soils.
