Choosing Your Peony: Herbaceous, Tree, and Itoh
Our collection features the three primary categories of peonies to suit every garden niche. Herbaceous Peonies are the classic garden favorites that die back to the ground in winter and return with lush green foliage and iconic blooms in spring. Tree Peonies offer a woody structure that remains above ground year-round, producing enormous, silky flowers. For the best of both worlds, our Itoh (Intersectional) Peonies combine the large, exotic blooms of tree peonies with the hardy, self-supporting nature of herbaceous varieties.
Quick Peony Growing Facts:
- Planting Window: Fall is the absolute best time to plant bare-root peonies to allow for root establishment before spring growth.
- Hardiness: Extremely resilient; reliable in USDA Zones 3-8.
- Sunlight: Requires full sun (6-8 hours) for the best bloom production.
- Soil Preference: Well-drained soil is critical. Peonies do not like "wet feet."
- Expert Tip (The Golden Rule): Planting depth is the #1 reason peonies fail to bloom. Ensure the "eyes" (the pink buds) are planted no deeper than 1-2 inches below the soil surface. Any deeper, and you will have beautiful leaves but no flowers!
