A Hopi heirloom prized for its purple-black seeds, used especially for coloring baskets.
High Mowing Organic Seeds - High Mowing sold this variety in our very first catalog, and we're bringing it back in part to complete the circle of our journey, and in part, because it's a great variety. Like us, it's scrappy and resilient and does a lot with a little, where the seeds are good for dye but also for food or feed, and are the best for de-hulling. The massive tall flowers are classically sunflower beautiful, with yellow rays around purple-black centers. Grown for countless generations, this variety will almost certainly still be used to make dye a hundred years from now. Approx. 500 seeds/oz.

The Seed Savers Exchange - A commanding presence in the garden, this heirloom amaranth grows 4½-6' tall with a showy display of dark purple-green leaves, solid purple stems, and long, draping deep purple-red inflorescences. Used for dye or as an ornamental, it comes to Seed Savers Exchange through Native Seeds/SEARCH, which notes this variety was collected in the lower area of Moenkopi, Arizona. The Hopi people make a natural scarlet food dye from the flower bracts to color piki bread. It flowers in mid-to-late-June in the Northeast Iowa if started indoors.

Firefly Farm & Mercantile's Iceland Poppy Mix is composed is yellows, oranges, and creamy papery blossoms. Iceland poppy's are super easy to grow. Blue Wild Indigo, Indigo Baptista, or False Indigo is a widespread native that is found in the Midwest and Eastern US. This native grows quickly and reaches heights of 4-5' once established. They are great in borders, areas you want a summer boundary, wildlife gardens, and their elegant nature lends themselves to even formal gardens.
It prefers drier soils and loves full sun. This is a host plant for many butterflies and attracts birds and pollinators, plus it is cover for beneficial insects. its seed pods are food for many songbirds.

Seed Exchange - (Talinum paniculatum) (aka Fameflower) Sure to become a favorite. Eye-catching mats of succulent chartreuse foliage. Producing crunchy, sweet, and fruity snap beans with an apple-grape flavor, this runner bean might unseat your favorite snap bean. In addition to tasting great fresh, the variety produces dry beans with a slightly sweet, earthy flavor and a smooth texture. A strong climber with beautiful flowers, the variety was developed by W. Deal & Sons Ltd., Kelvedon, Essex, England; introduced in 1950; and given to Seed Savers Exchange in 1981 by famed bean collector John Withee. Instructions - Sow seeds directly into a finely textured garden bed in full sun as early in spring as ground can be worked. To help space the fine seeds, mix with dry sand before sowing. Cover very lightly with fine soil and keep seed bed moist as seedlings emerge over 7 to 14 days Poppies can be started indoors as transplants but direct seeding is best and HIGHLY Recommended

The Seed Savers Exchange - Jan Suchomel of Van Horne, Iowa, discovered this poppy growing in the backyard garden when she moved to Van Horne from Cedar Rapids in 1967 and proceeded, over the next three decades, to give its seeds to all her family members. She was so taken with the flower that she even planted some of its seeds at the senior complex she moved to in 2003 so that she could continue to enjoy its colorful blooms. All plant parts except the seeds are toxic. 91 days.

Instructions - Direct seeding is preferable, as poppies do not like to have their roots disturbed. Sow seeds outdoors in the early spring when the soil is still cool and light frost is possible. Can also be sown in the fall just before the ground freezes. Plants will tolerate poor soil.
