The Seed Savers Exchange - This is the tofu of squashes, as it absorbs the flavors of the food with which it is cooked. It has a very mild taste, certainly not sweet as the name might suggest. A white-and-green, pear-shaped winter squash that can grow up to 12 pounds, the variety stores well and has a greenish-white flesh color. Some would recommend that its best use is for decoration only. This squash grows productively in cooler weather. First listed in 1847 by New York seedsman James Thorburn as Green Striped Bell and most likely renamed by Burpee in 1883. 95-100 days.

The Seed Savers Exchange - (C. pepo) (aka Thelma Sanders Sweet Potato) Originally from Thelma Sanders of Kirksville, Missouri. The seed was passed from Evert Pettit to Sue and Tom Knoche, Ohio squash collectors. All these seed stewards were among SSE’s earliest members. Wonderful cream-colored acorn squash. Renee's Garden - This wonderful Italian heirloom summer squash is a vigorous climbing vine, producing many 12 to 15 inch, lime-green fruits with a curvaceous trumpet shape and a delicate mild taste with a hint of nutty artichoke flavor. Trombetta’s flesh is seedless and firm and doesn’t get watery or mushy like regular zucchini. The rambling plants will soon cover a trellis, fence, or stakes with graceful fruits that hang like jade ornaments cloaked in a lush canopy of big, heart-shaped leaves.

The Living Seed Company - This squash is considered one of the treasures of the Pacific North West. This rare culinary variety has yet to catch on through out the rest of North America. Sweet Meat is recognized for its blue gray 12 - 20 lb. body, with brilliant yellow-orange interior. The versatile nutty super sweet meat of this winter squash is commonly used for baking, mashing, casseroles, stir-fries and makes incredible “pumpkin” pies!
