The Seed Savers Exchange - also knowns as Bicolor Runner, Painted Runner. Friar Antonio de Arrabida described this species in Flora of Rio de Janeiro in 1827. Incredibly beautiful bi-colored blossoms are very attractive to hummingbird moths. This strain is less affected by warmer temperatures than other runner beans and is a prolific bloomer. Esteemed as both an ornamental and edible climber. One of our oldest heirloom bulbs, Checkered Lily It must be planted in the fall right away as the bulb is somewhat small like a crocus but is a bit more fragile. But the good news is once it’s planted, it’s hardy and wonderful! If planted later towards winter you will get leaves but perhaps not flowers until the second year so do get them planted right away.  Checkered Fritillaria are amazing plants.  They are recorded as early as 1572 for how long they have been cultivated. Grass-like foliage and a sturdy stem support a unique checkered pattern flower. Easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. In 1963, West Virginia U. professor Mannon Gallegly released West Virginia 63 tomato, one of the first tomatoes bred for Late Blight resistance. 50 years later, Gallegly and colleague Mahfuz Rahman used WV 63 tomato to breed two new, larger tomatoes, with disease resistance now including Septoria leaf spot! Southern Exposure Seed Exchange - Beautiful 3-5 ft. plants with red stems and leaf veins. The bright red calyxes can be used to make “zingy” tea, sauce, syrup, or jam, or candied whole for an unusual treat. For strongly flavored teas, simmer for 10-20 minutes. Roselle was called “Florida cranberry” in the 1890s. The flowers and young leaves are edible and have a citrus tang. The stir-fried greens are much used in Burmese cooking! Timing harvest for the fall season to winter season for mild climates is important. We prefer to raise them as starts but they can be direct sown as well.  Sow indoors 4 weeks before last frost or direct sow when the ground can be worked  Sow 1/4” deep, Germination 5-10 days Plant apart 24"  Continue to dress with compost nor other choice fertilizers every 30-45 days or so as they are heavy feeders  Use row covers to protect from flea beetles, moths and other pests. Harvesting after a frost will yield very sweet Brussels.

Bearded Irises are hardy from Zone 3 all the way to Zone 10.  They do not need a chilling period so they can grow almost anywhere in the United States.  Bearded Irises are extremely easy and forgiving.
